If you're sawing downward and applying a lot of pressure, when the pressure suddenly lets up (like you cut through all the wood), if you're not being careful, your muscle keeps pushing down and if the blade hits a rock/ground below, you relax the pressure since the cutting seems to be done but the unexpected impact will make the blade will bounce back up - without the your pressure, it'll fly back into your face/body/arms.. teeth. Long explanation, there's other ways it kicks back too.
