Pepperberg did work Alex pretty hard - as she herself worked. But she really loved him. The morning he died, the phone kept ringing with reporters wanting a statement. Each time, she'd turn off her emotions just long enough to get through the interview, then hang up and cry her heart out for 90 seconds, until the next call came.
Asked what she hoped would come out of her research, Pepperberg said she hoped that understanding how intelligent birds are would make people treat them better.

Haosking1 - You're missing the point. This bird is performing mental tasks that were considered strictly human traits or, at very best, only achievable by heavily trained primates. And if you think humans "rule" the world, think again. We only live here by geological consent. Mother Nature could wipe us out in short order. For all our technology, we cannot stop natural disasters.
Anyway, the point is that animals are smarter than we (or scientists) used to believe. Alex was proof of that.

look at how he actually knows what he's saying... he actually tells her that he wants to go back to the cage so that's like talking to an animal...

When he says he wants to go back it seems like it's on the easier questions, like they were too easy for him.
