The saddest aviation catastrophe of all time. And it was all because of one row of rivets not being installed instead of the mandatory TWO rows of rivets. My father was promoted to a B747-200 Captain (Malaysia Airlines) in the same month and year as this accident. So when he heard the news about the crash, he immediately notified his superiors to inspect the B747s in the fleet, which they promptly did.

I have no idea why my government refused help from US military...
I still remember the day, the shock I've felt when I heard of the crash....it was only the start of a horrible nightmare for many people left behind.

I have not forgotten the events of that day... every August, I remember the 524 who took off... and the 520 who remained in the sky after the plane crashed. And I still ask the same question... why couldn't we help?? Would it have been so wrong to let us?

To date, I still wonder why we were not allowed to help!! I was assigned to Yokota Air Base at the time. We were told he was coming to us and we were waiting... just waiting. We handle the C-5 and have overruns to handle large aircraft landing w/out brakes (as he would have been if he had come to us). We saw him turn away from us and disappear. When we heard he had crashed, our guys were some of the first ones gone. Why couldn't we help?? We were waiting... and hoping... come to us.

Sad, I love JAL,I use that Airline frequantly to travel, This happend a few years before I was born, I think its the only Crash in JAL's history, unless there were one's in the 50s. but I have heard nothing of that. Some airlines, like American Airlines, have had more then 6 crashes in its history.

I am not sure if the engineer who did the repair on the aircraft committed suicide but I know for a fact the head of maintainence for JAL committed suicide after the crash as he felt it was partly his fault for not checking the repair properly. I know this as my father was a captain for JAL who retired in 1983 and was still friends with other pilots at the time.

My father was a captain for JAL who retired in 1983, so he was still in the loop. I was 5 at the time of the crash and also in Japan. I remember speaking about it when I was a little older to my father, I remember they did find the jaw of the pilot which was identified by dental records. Not sure about the other 2 though. |
