black mesa is the company in Half Life that is the competition to aperature science the company that you work in on this game.

Playing the first game a bit, Black Mesa is the facility that the main character of Half-Life (Gordon Freeman) destroys by pushing a component into this energy beam thing and causes a massive explosion. Look up, We Love You Dr. Freeman, it tells you everything up to episode 2 of Half-Life. God bless!
