Yes. Tuning a sitar is tricky. The local music shop can help with that.

Nah, you just don't have the understrings tuned right. They are probably really loose. If you can, find someone who knows what they are actually doing to help you with that.

absolutely ace. I own a sitar but mine doesnt have that characteristic "buzzing" sound when I play it's main string, like george's here, anyone got any tips? Will it involve filing down the bridge or such?

regardless, find a teacher at some point. there are many sitar teachers hidden around the world, just look for centers teaching east indian classical music and they should point you in the right direction.

Thanks ;=D You're literally the ONLY person to get that!

i hear most learn through apprenticeship, but i think books and videos would be a more realistic medium for people like me. also, nice frank black reference :)

Yes. There is a great deal of discipline to learning it. Perhaps that is a facet of the spiritual nature of sitar; the self-denial. The harder a thing is to do, the greater the accomplishment. You will succeed!

i've always wanted to play one, but i hear you have to develop very hard callouses to do it effectively

The sitar is a beautiful and esoteric instrument. You will make great music
