SS Decontrol came up at the same time as Minor Threat, them and Negative Approach were the most aggressive of the early 80s hardcore bands. Listening to SSD and watching videos of them play, you see how angry they were. I guess they had to direct their anger somewhere, and some of them ended up directing it at people who drink etc. That doesn't excuse it, but they were just angry kids.

I just think the dude has turned into sort of a cool ornball.
I mean the only people who care about Ian Mackaye in 2008 are old hardocre kids who
are so narrowminded they will be into hardcore until they are dead.
Then there are the little kids who idolize him.
