RSG! The Sound Of Motown (1965) #5

More live Motown medley with Smokey Robinson and The Miracles (Shop Around), The Supremes (Where Did Our Love Go). Followed by the finale 'Mickey's Monkey' with Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, and everyone else joining in: The Supremes, The Temptations, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Dusty Springfield. With the Earl Van Dyke Sextet. From the Ready Steady Go (RSG), Sound Of Motown TV special, recorded at the Rediffusion TV studios in London on 18 March 1965. **Historical notes**: This special was mainly Dusty Springfield's idea, to promote the Motown music and artists in Britain. Dusty was an occasional presenter of the weekly Ready Steady Go (which had the tag line... The Weekend Starts Here). She was a big fan of Motown music, and suggested the idea for this special to Vicki Wickham, recording artists manager, and RSG's producer at Rediffusion. Let's hope that this show (and other surviving RSG footage) one day gets a DVD release. It's now been 20 years since anything's been heard of these shows. The "Rediffusion London" TV station ceased to exist after July 1968, when the franchise for commercial TV in the London region changed. Sadly, only a handful of their music shows have survived. Most of the RSG shows are now lost to history.

I think it would have raised a few eyebrows amongst a certain section of the population in Great Britain as well! You have to bear in mind that young people loved this kind of music, but many older people hated it (and pop music in general) - so probably wouldn't have appreciated 45 mins of Motown on primetime TV. Pop music wasn't considered as mainstream entertainment in the way it is today. So it probably was quite daring of them to put this show on.

Just to add to your comments. It was actually a 'Rediffusion London' production (not the BBC) - they were the independent commercial TV channel, ITV, for the London area from 1955-68. RSG was a weekly pop show on which Dusty was an occasional presenter - but this was a special edition showcasing Motown (an idea that Dusty had pitched to the show's producer).

Just to expand further on my comment below: Just think how a show like this would not have been allowed to be put together or even aired in the U.S. back in 1965 due to the fact we were in the midst of the civil rights era fights (& even w/ the U.S. Congress passing & LBJ signing the Civil Rights & Voting Rights act in that year & 1964 respectively) w/ whites & blacks both singing & dancing, together. My how nicely things have changed since then. Think about it.

It was only broadcast in Great Britian in 1965. It's from the BBC & it was Dusty showing her appreciation for Motown (to answer someone {mrtunemizer} below it's been explained to me that Marvin Gaye, the Marvelettes & the Four Tops had other things going on -- I think a U.S. tour at the time this show aired live so they couldn't come to London for this show -- I'm sure they would have if they could have). I do wonder if a show like this could have been put together in the U.S. back in '65?

Stop and think about the Hall of Fame talent on this show...in one room! Wow. Some of the giants of rock and roll. What was this...some TV show I never saw as a teenager?

Wow that's some serious moves, I came looking for a Christmas song by Motown. Its not like any other I've heard. Please if anyone knows of it, let me know. It was about boys growing up to be men...and no bombs...and peace on earth.

And another thing, why is it when they sing The Miracles' "Mickeys Monkey" all you hear is Diana's screeching voice in the backgrounds? Always got to have her microphone turned up high...geez! lol

I know that Mary Wells was released from her contract by this time but where are Marvin Gaye, The Marvelettes and the Four tops on this special?
